Braden was born on July,08 2006 to Christina Lay and Jeremy Maples. Brother of Autumn Paige. He was a beautiful little boy. He looked alot like dad,his mouth and eyes were shaped like his sisters and he had moms birthmark. He is loved and missed by mom, dad, big sissy, grandparents, great grandparents, and lots of other family and special friends. He went to heaven on September,02 2006. Braden was delivered by emergency c-section almost 12 wks early due to mom having severe preeclampsia. He weighed 1lb. and 7oz. and was 12 inches long. He was taken to UK-NICU immediatly after birth and put on a ventilator along with other wires to check his sats and vital signs. He was a little fighter from day one. Just two days after being in NICU he decided he was going to breath on his own and his ventilator was removed. He was making great progess and within two wks he had started his tube feedings. He had started to gain a little weight and seemed to be getting a little stronger. Braden's first three wks of life seemed to be going well,so we decided it would be a great time for his big sister to meet him. When we got to the hospital we found out Braden was having a bad day. He was forgetting to breath on his own,and would soon be put back on the ventilator. He was also very fussy.We only got to have a short visit with him. Within an hour we were back at the hospital to learn Braden was going to be takin into emergency surgery because his belly was swollen and turning black. After surgery we were told Braden had NEC.(Necrotizing enterocolitis) a serious condition which means the intestines have damage. This is something very common for premature babys to get and it comes all at once with no warnings. When the surgeon went in he didn't take out all of the intestine because he seen there was still good left and just planned to repair the bad. This would have to be done at a later date because his little body was not strong enough to have this done yet. The next five wks of his life was like a roller coaster ride. He had his good days along with the bad. His feeding tube was removed and he was put on TPNs,a substitute for food. His right lung had colapsed two different times and due to all the medications he was on it was causing his liver to shut down. We also learned that the TPNs were causing problems with his viens.His belly had started to swell again and doctors decided to go ahead with trying to repair the bad intestine hoping it would save him because thats what was needed in order for him to be taken off the TPNs and most of the medications to. As i said earlier all the intestine was not removed and when they went in to repair the bad they learned there was never enough intestines there to begin with. They explained to us there was still hope for Braden because he could still have a transplant when he turned a year old or gained 15 lbs. whichever came first. As time went on all odds were against us. His liver was only getting worse and he was not gaining nearly enough weight, also his little body was starting to shut down. We all wanted Braden to just get better and be able to come home with his family and thought in the begining he was on his way, but as time went on we knew that his days were getting shorter and he had fought for as long as he could. He had been through so much and was getting tired. We decided that he had been through enough and suffered a great deal of pain. We made the choice to have his ventilator tube removed. We were told he could live anywhere from ten minutes to an hour, he stayed with us for three. There was alot of people there with us including some very special nurses. I think he stayed to meet everyone and get all his lovins. He died very very peacefully. He touched many many peoples lives and is thought of everyday and missed soooo much. Daddy, mommy and sissy are so thankful we were able to be a part of his life even just for a short time, and that he got to meet us and know how much he was loved and will be forever. God bless every parent who has lost a child we know your pain. And God bless any parents who have children that they don't care anything about, maybe they will read this and it will change their lives. It only took one little moment to change ours forever. Braden i know we will meet again someday.
